Why is Gambling Haram: Understanding the Prohibition

Gambling, known as “Maysir” in Arabic, is considered haram, or prohibited, in Islam. This prohibition stems from several key reasons aligned with Islamic teachings:

  • Moral Ethics: Gambling encourages greed and impulsiveness, which contradicts the values of moderation and self-control.
  • Social Impact: It can lead to addiction, financial ruin, and social problems, disrupting individual lives and communities.
  • Economic Injustice: Gambling promotes wealth disparity as it involves unearned, windfall profits at the expense of others’ losses.
  • Spiritual Well-being: Engaging in gambling detracts individuals from worship and remembrance of Allah, hindering spiritual growth.
